The series consists of four half-length portraits of Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, each identified by their customary iconographic attributes: Matthew is accompanied by an angel, Mark holds a pen and book, Luke is flanked by the bull's head in the lower left, and John is depicted as a young man with an eagle in the lower right. The composition, with the figures emerging from a dark background in keeping with the 17th-century lighting tradition, harks back to the pictorial culture of 18th-century Northern Italy. The painting is loose and direct, with an effective rendering of the facial features and a good overall execution. Works of this type were intended for private devotion and for decorating domestic oratories or chapels.
