German painter (18th-19th century) – Trompe l'oeil with documents, engravings and still life.
38 x 53 cm (without frame) – 41,5 x 56,5 cm (with frame).
Tempera on paper, in a gilded wooden frame.
German painter of the German-speaking world, active between the 18th and 19th centuries. The painting belongs to the genre of trompe l'oeil, a compositional formula with a long-standing Northern European tradition that simulates a flat surface on which overlapping papers, prints, documents, and clippings are piled. The illusionistic rendering is meticulously executed: we can discern an assignat of the French Republic, an Austrian genealogical almanac, engravings with figures, a view of a bridge, a portrait of a gentleman, and a still life with a cat, fruit, and vegetables, all arranged with studied randomness on a painted wooden background. The German and French texts visible on the papers testify to a cultured Central European cultural environment, likely dating to the Austro-Germanic area between the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
