Dahl Jensen, Danish sculptor and ceramist, attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1894 to 1897. He travels to Europe to broaden his artistic knowledge by studying other manufactures, visiting Berlin, Dresden, Switzerland and Italy. From 1897 to 1917 he was artistic director at the Bing & Grondahl factory in Copenhagen and from 1917 to 1925 he also managed the production of Norden. He was the most appreciated Animalier sculptor of the entire factory, he tried his hand not only with porcelain but also experimented with bronze, some works were exhibited in Charlottenborg, Malmö, Berlin, Munich and San Francisco. Even today, Royal Copenhagen produces his models for limited edition collections. His works were very successful in Italy and the United States, his son Georg Dahl Jensen continued his father's tradition, in 1985 the company closed after having created more than 400 models.
The Bing & Grondahl factory originated from the talent of the sculptor Frederick Grondahl who had worked at Royal Copenhagen with the help of other partners and businessmen from the city who joined together to open the workshop in 1853. In 1889 the first Christmas plate with a cobalt blue design that is made for the occasion every year, collected with passion all over the world. Thanks to the creativity of designers such as Dahl Jensen, the animal-themed sculptures became the main niche production of the manufacturer, so much so that they were purchased by Royal Copenhagen in 1987 to bring small masterpieces to light.
