Mughal Empire, 18th century
40,2 × 6,7 × 1,2 cm
Damascus Steel/Damascus Iron, Gold
The rare Katar made of wootz steel enriched with koftgari gold gemstone represents the most iconic sidearm of the Indian subcontinent. The blade has the characteristic triangular shape and is lined in the center with a palmette motif originating from an iris. On both external side bars adjacent to the handle there are concave engravings that originally contained set cabochon rubies. The state of conservation is very good although the blade has undergone greater oxidation than the handle, both of which do not affect the beauty of the Katar.
Length: 40,2 cm.
Provenance: former AMB private collection and subsequently former AC collection until 2021.
