Full details of the work (click HERE)

The painting represents the biblical episode taken from the book of Genesis (Genesis 22, 23): Eliezer, the most faithful servant of the patriarch Abraham, is sent by the latter to his country of origin in search of a suitable wife for his son Isaac, and thus ensure a lineage for his lineage.

He sets out with a caravan of ten camels and precious gifts, when he reaches a well, tired and thirsty. Here he meets a young girl named Rebecca, who offers him freshly drawn water and also takes care of his camels.
The servant will interpret this gesture of kindness as a divine sign, recognizing in her the bride predestined by God for Isaac.

Our painting illustrates the scene in which Elizier, who is preparing to drink from an amphora, then orders his servant to open the chest full of precious jewels to give them to the woman.

Observing the canvas in its compositional aspect, with its sparkling palette, the theatrical gestures that animate the characters, the narrative brilliance and pleasant pictorial quality, we can easily attribute its authorship to the hand of Francesco de Mura (Naples, 1696 – 1782), one of the major interpreters of Neapolitan painting of the 18th century, or to an artist from his workshop.

In this regard, it is worth noting that his style highlights the pictorial lexicon of the liveliest eighteenth-century Neapolitan figurative culture, derived from the study of the works of great masters such as Luca Giordano, Francesco Solimena and Paolo de Matteis, without neglecting the light pictorial ductus and vaguely pearly colours resulting from knowledge of the works of Corrado Giaquinto.
