Full details of the work (click HERE)

The painting represents the biblical episode taken from the book of Genesis (Genesis 22, 23) where it is said that Eliezer, the most faithful servant of the patriarch Abraham, is sent by the latter to his country of origin in search of a suitable wife for his son Isaac, and thus ensure a lineage for his lineage.

He sets out with a caravan of ten camels and precious gifts, when he reaches a well, tired and thirsty, and here he meets a girl named Rebecca, who offers him freshly collected water, also taking care of his camels.

The servant will interpret this gesture of kindness as a divine sign, recognizing her as the bride God had predestined for Isaac. Our painting illustrates the scene in which Elizier gives the girl a precious pearl necklace, just removed from the jewel-filled chest that his kneeling servant holds open while the other grooms the camels. Rebecca, wearing a sumptuous light-colored dress wrapped in a yellow silk mandi, her hair gathered in an oriental-style tiara, is surrounded by a group of cheering companions, and she enthusiastically accepts the gift.

Observing the canvas now in detail, in its stylistic and compositional aspects, with its bright palette, the theatrical gestures that animate the characters, the narrative brilliance and the undisputed pictorial quality and attention to detail, we can limit its authorship to an artist of the Roman school active between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, without neglecting the reminiscences with Bolognese culture.

In particular, the work can be attributed to the circle of painters active in the orbit of Pietro Berrettini, known as Pietro da Cortona (Cortona 1597 – Rome 1669), one of the exponents of the Baroque school and the founder of a large group of followers. Among the countless students and artists influenced by his style are Ciro Ferri, Lorenzo Berettini, Guillaume Courtois, Lazzaro Baldi, and Giovanni Francesco Romanelli.
