After dedicating himself to an intense activity as an illustrator which saw him engaged with important Italian and foreign publishers, starting from 1970 he dedicated himself exclusively to painting, developing a gallery of characters intent on the rituals of everyday life and of which he highlights vices, habits, weaknesses and conformism.
A simple and shy man, he spoke above all through his increasingly sought-after works. He often dedicates himself to ironic reinterpretations of works from the past and develops his research through thematic cycles: The Seven Deadly Sins, The Sea, The Cabaret, Sino and the early 900s.
Squillantini's expressionist irony unfolds with vigor in the representation of the most characterized "types", often narrated in contexts dear to the Impressionists, Cézanne or the German Expressionists of the Neue Sachlichkeit.
Paolo Levi cites a writing on Squillantini by Mino Maccari who also states that the protagonists of Squillantini's paintings "are the worthy heirs of Giuseppe Giusti's characters, not to go back to Juvenal".
Squillantini's "Tuscan nature" then emerges in the natural, "osmotic" association with Giotto and Piero della Francesca, his teachers and fellow countrymen, but also from the fact that Stia, a town in the province of Arezzo where Squillantini was born, is also the place where the Ghibelline Dante was exiled and where, as the painter himself states, "the Arno is born and art is born".
Remo Squillantini's works have been exhibited in important public and private galleries. Among the solo exhibitions: - Galleria Santacroce, Florence in 1978 - Casino, Sanremo in 1988 - Caffè Pedrocchi, Padua 1992-1993 - Tour Fromage, Aosta in 1999 - Rocca Ariostesca, Castelnuovo in Garfagnana in 2002 - Municipal Gallery of Modern Art and Contemporanea, Piombino in 2005 - Galleria Marano, Crotone in 2010 - Archaeological Area of Paestum in 2012.
