Description

The Tirthamkara, "crosser of the ford" or "victorious" is the title used in Jainism to indicate the 24 prophets who followed one another in historical cycles to reveal Jainism itself to humanity.
The master is sitting in the Dhyana asana position and appears naked or 'dressed in air', the epithet attributed to the Digambara, one of the two currents of Jainism. The sculpture is made of dark stone and the distinctive sign of a bull is engraved on the base which identifies it as the master Rishabhanatha.
The surface of the sculpture is abraded and smooth to the touch and retains traces of dust sediments consolidated over time and used in religious rituals. Beautiful patina of time.
