SW Clifford was a British painter active in the second half of the 19th century, whose work falls within the tradition of the English Romantic landscape. His work reveals a solid mastery of atmospheric rendering and a sensitive handling of light filtered through vegetation, in keeping with the models of Victorian landscape painting.
The painting depicts a wooded ravine crossed by a stream cascading over moss-covered boulders, while in the background a metal trellis bridge spans the stream amidst the trees. The composition is constructed in depth, with the shadowy foreground gradually opening toward a bright central area. The brushwork is meticulous in rendering the foliage and moving water, with a well-balanced palette of greens and browns.
