Sculpture devotion of a Jina, the victorious being of the Digambara sect

Rare figure of a Tirthamkara (or tirthankar or jina), "crosser of the ford" or "victorious", the title used in Jainism to indicate the 24 prophets who followed one another in historical cycles to reveal this faith to humanity. The devotion of this figure is meditative in nature and emphasizes the importance of austere and rigorous practices.
Standing on a circular base, this liberated being is in a symmetrical posture; his nakedness connects him to the Digambara sect whose etymological meaning is the 'clothes of air (or from the sky)', in the sense of naked, one of the two groups in which Jainism is distinguished.
The state of conservation is excellent although the Tirthamkara appears slightly abraded due to constant ritual use carried out by rubbing the bronze with sandalwood paste, water, milk, curd and clarified butter. Beautiful brown patina.
