late sixteenth century
54 x 30 xh 110 cm.
Italian sculptor (16th century) – Saint Maurus.
54 x 30 xh 110 cm.
Full-length figure in carved, lacquered and painted wood.
The sculpture depicts a full-length standing Saint Maurus, identified by the inscription "MAVRV..." at the base. The saint is depicted in monastic robes, wrapped in a loose cloak whose drapes fall in deep, intricate folds, with a composed, frontal gesture. The rendering of the drapery reveals a solid mastery of carving technique, with a treatment of volumes still indebted to the late Gothic tradition, updated with Renaissance solutions in the structure of the face and the general arrangement of the figure. The work, likely intended for devotional purposes, is part of the 16th-century Italian sculptural production intended for liturgical furnishings in churches or private chapels.
