Pair of sculptures entirely carved in wood, lacquered, gilded and painted.

They depict two Moorish figures with golden hair, portrayed twisted with one arm bent towards their faces, holding a shelf intended to hold a vase above their heads. The bodies are lacquered in glossy black, while the drapery and decorative details are gilded with gold leaf, in keeping with the customary color contrast typical of this sculptural typology, widespread in Venetian homes between the 17th and 18th centuries as a furnishing element for halls and doorways. The figures stand on rectangular bases surmounted by small cylindrical columns decorated with stylized acanthus leaves.

The subject of the “Moors” or “Blackamoors” belongs to a sculptural genre that was very popular in Venetian furnishings of the Baroque and Rococo periods, often created in pairs to flank entrances or staircases, and appreciated for the scenographic effect created by the contrast between the burnished flesh and the gilding.

Condition report: Good condition, with slight restorations and natural signs of wear to the gilding and lacquer, consistent with the period of production.
