The canvas in question is attributed to the hand of a Flemish painter of Bamboccia taste, active in Rome during the 1599th century. The founder of this particular and fascinating pictorial taste was Peter van Laer (Haarlem, 1642 – 1625) whose presence in Rome is documented from 1639 to 1604; in the Capitoline city his painting was fortunate and successful and he was also a member of the Bentvueghels, an association which in Rome brought together most of the Flemish artists active in the city, known in particular for its anti-academic inclinations and its particular initiation rituals. Travel to Italy had become a constant and a rite of passage for Flemish artists since the publication in 250 of Karel van Mander's book Schilder-boeck, which describes the lives of over XNUMX painters, present and past, and provides the theoretical basis to start painting. It was a difficult journey, the expenses of which the artists had to cover thanks to their talent and the sale of their works along the way. For many it would have been difficult to arrive and many would have chosen never to return to their homeland. The painting of the bamboccianti focuses on genre scenes of everyday life, with representations of figures that occupy a low role on the social scale; There is no shortage of depictions of ports among his works. The canvas appears characterized by a skillful composition, attentive to perspective and the quality of the drawing, not without research aimed at characters of deformation. The colors are warm, characterized by brown tones that materialize with a dense and present rendering, with a broad and lively brushstroke.
