17th-century Flemish School, "Still Life with a Vase of Flowers, Grapes, and Peaches," oil on canvas. In good condition. The stretcher and re-lining are from the 20th century. A careful examination with the aid of a Wood's lamp revealed no significant restorations or overpainting.
The painting depicts a lush still life of flowers, where numerous colorful buds are gathered in a large vase placed atop a stone shelf: tulips, hyacinths, anemones, roses, and other species compose the bouquet, expertly arranged against a dark background to highlight the sinuous shapes of the stems, leaves, and especially the bright, dazzling colors of the petals. In the lower right section of the painting, some fruit is depicted: two yellow peaches with silky skin, a bunch of white grapes, and a bunch of black grapes. The work demonstrates the work of a talented Flemish painter trained in the prestigious 17th-century Flemish tradition, although at the same time, the decisive execution, the sensitivity to light, and the choice of certain painted subjects (grapes and peaches, in particular) reveal a typically Mediterranean verve, evident in the soft and balanced harmonies of the bright colors of the buds. The author displays all his baroque exuberance and Nordic talent for the precise description of various floral typologies, influenced however by the Roman and Neapolitan still lifes of the second half of the seventeenth century.
