Altarpiece with Allegory of Wealth
Marble, 35,5 x 66 x 17 cm
Latin inscription on the front: IN TE DOMINE SPERAVI NON CONFUNDAR IN AETERNUM [In you, Lord, I have hoped: that I may not remain confused forever]
A small private devotional altar carved in white marble, dating back to 18th-century Genoese production, characterized by a late Baroque style that is still dynamic but already moving toward a softer rocaille style. The composition is set on a rectangular base bearing the engraved Latin inscription: "IN TE DOMINE SPERAVI NON CONFUNDAR IN AETERNUM" (Psalm 30), a formula of trust in divine protection frequently associated with domestic devotional objects.
On the sides are depicted two reclining cherubs, modeled with soft, naturalistic anatomies, blowing long trumpets pointing toward the center. Each rests on a cornucopia filled with coins, a clear allegory of wealth and abundance, an iconographic theme that in the Christian context takes on a symbolic meaning of prosperity bestowed by Providence. The central circular motif, framed by volutes and foliage, houses a polychrome stone insert (likely marble or pietra dura), conceived as the object's visual and spiritual fulcrum.
The altarpiece had a devotional function: it was placed on a table, a shelf, or a small domestic oratory to support a crucifix, a sacred statuette, a relic, or a votive image. In some cases, it could also serve as a base for candlesticks during private prayer.
