Second half of the 19th century.

Follower of the Master of the Guardeschi Flowers, “Flowering Vase”. Period, second half of the 800th century. First canvas painting. Lacquered and gilded poplar wood frame contemporary with the painting. The anonymous, XNUMXth-century author of the painting in question is directly inspired by the style of the so-called “Master of the Guardeschi Flowers”, a character around whom critics have collected a large number of still lifes, all characterized by a quick and material brushstroke, a light composition and an asymmetry in the structure of the parts. In the present case, the canvas depicts a flowering vase, placed askew on a stone shelf. The ceramic container is in turn painted in the central body to represent a bucolic scene, with a fisherman on a small bridge in the foreground, a bridge that joins the banks of a narrow stream, on one of which a pine tree stands tall. In the background, a hilly landscape opens up, all rendered in a sketchy and summary style. Perhaps, it is precisely this trompe-l'oeil landscape depiction on ceramics that suggests the production center of the work. Emilia-Romagna at the end of the XNUMXth century was a land of great ceramic painters (among all, we remember Luigi Banzi from Bologna and Tomaso Dal Pozzo from Faenza), who worked for the most prestigious furnaces of the time, decorating two-handled amphorae and especially the large senatorial vases with bucolic landscape scenes similar to the one in our canvas. Therefore, an Emilia-Romagna paternity of the still life cannot be excluded.
