The painting depicts the encounter between Christ and the Canaanite woman, an episode recounted in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark. During his preaching, Jesus is approached by a Canaanite—and therefore pagan—woman who begs him to heal her daughter, who is suffering from a serious illness, also described as demonic possession. The Savior, testing the woman's faith, initially offers her a scornful response, reminding her that he was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. However, faced with the humility and perseverance of the supplicant, who compares herself to the dogs that feed on the crumbs fallen from their children under the table, Christ recognizes her faith and consents to the healing. The woman, returning home, finds her daughter healed. The scene, captured at the culminating moment of the imploration, shows Christ bending towards the kneeling woman, in a gesture of welcome that anticipates the granting of grace, while a little dog crouching at the protagonist's feet alludes precisely to the parable of the crumbs.

The composition presented here is directly based on Annibale Carracci's famous original, now housed in the Pinacoteca Stuard in Parma, considered one of the Bolognese master's first Roman works. The painting was created for the private chapel inside the Palazzo Farnese in Rome, and still bears evident traces of the figurative culture Annibale brought with him from Bologna, particularly its affinity with the canvas of a similar subject painted a few years earlier by his cousin Ludovico Carracci as part of the decoration of Palazzo Sampieri, a project in which Annibale himself had participated with his brother Agostino. Our painting, the work of a follower active in the second half of the 17th century, faithfully reproduces Carracci's compositional structure: the arrangement of the figures, Christ's gesture, the woman's pleading pose, and even the presence of the dog are taken from the original model, testifying to the enduring influence of that invention among painters of subsequent generations.

Annibale Carracci's Canaanite Woman enjoyed extraordinary popularity throughout the 17th century. In addition to the autograph version now in Parma, another version is known, preserved in Dijon, and numerous copies by various hands attest to the composition's widespread circulation among collectors and workshops. Its fame was significantly cemented by engravings based on the original, notably those by Pietro del Pò and Carlo Cesi, which allowed Carracci's invention to circulate well beyond the confines of Rome, reaching workshops and collectors throughout Italy and becoming an iconographic reference for the subject. The work's renown is also confirmed by written testimonies of the time: both Giovan Pietro Bellori and Carlo Cesare Malvasia discussed it in their biographical and critical accounts, recognizing this canvas as one of the most successful and most imitated inventions of Annibale Carracci's entire production, capable of establishing itself as a lasting model for the pictorial rendering of the Gospel episode well beyond the end of the century.
