early eighteenth century
70 cm x 45 cm.
Carved, lacquered and painted wooden mirror. Venice, 18th century
70 cm x 45 cm.
Entirely made of finely carved, lacquered and painted wood with elegant curls. Floral motif decoration.
Influenced by the original oriental techniques, Venetian lacquering developed in the workshops of local craftsmen with a unique and unmistakable style. Its ability to reflect light and enrich the rooms with bright colors and variegated decorations, often matching the rich fabrics that adorned the halls, soon made it a status symbol in the living rooms of the time. Owning lacquered furniture and mirrors was a distinctive sign of wealth and refinement, the decorations had to be of high quality and able to amaze the visitor.
Table mirrors were an extremely elegant accessory for the exclusive use of ladies who used them for their daily toilette. Venetian masters created these miniature masterpieces that combined refined carvings, with leaf and festoon friezes, with the most precious lacquers in bright colors and decorations of all kinds (with floral motifs, “a Chinoiseries” or landscapes), giving free rein to their imagination and reaching heights of extreme elegance.
