The refined coastal view that we present to you is a work signed and dated by the Dutch landscape painter Hubertus van Hove (The Hague, 1814 – Antwerp, 1865), son of Bartholomeus van Hove (1790-1880). The work exhibits excellent taste and quality of execution, showing a tender feeling for nature, with a romantic imprint, and a truly surprising mastery of drawing and delicacy of chiaroscuro and harmony.

Although his major production was concentrated in works depicting domestic scenes, he was also an excellent landscape painter, a master in the use of light which he managed to infuse into his works through fast and precise brushstrokes, creating lively compositions like the one present in the catalogue.

Here we see a glimpse of one of the most fascinating beaches in the Netherlands, a few kilometers away from the city of The Hague, which overlooks the North Sea. This area, as early as the 17th century, became a very popular seaside resort for entertainment, walking and buying fish among the citizens of nearby The Hague.

We are on a bright day on a wide sandy beach populated by numerous people who have come to breathe the crisp sea air and intent on various activities. In the foreground we see a well-dressed couple on horseback, probably on a trip to the seaside, accompanied by a servant and a knight, observing the catch placed on the beach by a family of fishermen. Behind them a carriage has stopped, the wealthy passenger chats with another bourgeois couple, while a servant protects them from the sun with an umbrella.

The space is occupied mainly by the sky, crossed by some clouds and illuminated by a pale sun, typical is the clear and delicate light that gives a great sense of tranquility to the composition.

The Dutch were the first to think of the sea in a ''modern'' sense, as a place of leisure, and already in the seventeenth century the beach of Scheveningen, famous because it was also the subject of paintings by Vincent van Gogh, was a place of pastime and outdoor activities open.

Many Flemish authors, first of all Adriaen van de Velde, used to portray this very beach, teeming with middle class characters who loved to enjoy their free time, as well as the fishermen who populated the area all year round. Among the most famous works are 'The Scheveningen Beach' (Staatliche Museen, Kassel) or 'Carriage on the Scheveningen Beach' (The Royal Collection, Buckingham Palace) [1] both by Adriaen van de Velde, very similar to the painting we propose , and from which our author must necessarily have taken inspiration.
