Description

Guillaume Courtois known as “the Burgundian” (Saint Hippolyte 1626 – Rome 1679)
Diana's rest
Oil on canvas (97 x 70 cm – framed 121 x 95 cm)

The proposed painting, of excellent quality and artistic level, is a work carried out in the second half of the seventeenth century by an author from the Roman area.

The episode illustrates the rest of the goddess of the hunt Diana, depicted asleep lying in the shade of a tree, half naked with only a veil covering her pubis and lying on a blue sheet, after a hunting trip, with the spear still between her her hands and quiver lying in front of her. The goddess, ready to enjoy the pleasures of a relaxing sleep, is surrounded and protected by a host of fluttering cupids, some playing with one of her hounds, some having fun riding a branch, while others are busy holding up a red cloth, as if to protect its privacy from possible prying eyes.

The analysis of the stylistic and figurative characters, as anticipated, shows its belonging to the Roman school of the mid-seventeenth century, capable of expressing a refined style, and managing to amalgamate the baroque language, sumptuous by definition, with elements of classicist ancestry.

It is therefore a painting of immediate beauty, capable of combining notable pictorial finesse with a scenic construction capable of satisfying even the most demanding gaze.

In particular, the work shows clear reminiscences with the Cortona area, and precisely with the figure of Guillaume Courtois known as "il Borgognone" (Saint Hippolyte 1626 - Rome 1679). In his painting, and therefore also in the proposed work, a classicist figurative culture emerges with influences from typically Baroque legacies, from which his training in the workshop of Pietro da Cortona can be deduced.

The painting, in a good state of conservation, has a slight patina of age which we decided not to clean, as the work remains perfectly legible. It features a professionally executed relining, and is complete with a pleasant period carved wooden frame.
