Description

The Resurrection of Christ
Follower of Tiziano Vecellio (Pieve di Cadore 1490 – Venice 1576)

Venetian school of the late 500th/early 600th century

Oil on canvas (108 x 78 cm. – In frame 129 x 99 cm.)

This jewel of the Venetian school, a work created between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries by an author from the Venetian area, illustrates the episode of the Resurrection of Christ: as reported in the Gospel of Matthew (Mt 28,1-7) the event is accompanied by a explosion of light and flashes, with the figure of Christ rising into the sky.

The face of Christ, serene and victorious, looks up towards the Light and the Infinite, in contrast to his majestic figure, here constructed with the appearance of a classical sculpture, contrasted by an intensely luminous background.

The Risen One firmly holds in his hand the banner (white with a red cross) of the Resurrection, also known as the flag of Saint George, which iconographically represents His victory over death, while raising his right hand in a blessing gesture. With his feet he crushes a snake and a skull, a sign of Christ's triumph over sin and death.

The painting is part of the Venetian school and has clear reminiscences with the works of Tiziano Vecellio (Pieve di Cadore 1490 – Venice 1576), which allow us to attribute its execution to a follower of the master, due to the style and dictate pictorial.

The extraordinary brightness that envelops in a skilful chiaroscuro is clearly of Titian ancestry: the composition is crossed by an intense glow that irradiates the body of Christ, emphasizing a rather sober and very bright chromatic range.

To better focus on the recognisability of the model, our composition is compared with the Risen Christ by Tatian now in the Uffizi Gallery, where we can find the same layout (https://www.uffizi.it/mostre-virtuali/pasqua-2019# 39).

State of conservation: The canvas is in a good state of conservation considering its age; There is an old lining present. Complete with gilded and lacquered frame.
