Tommaso Della Volpe (Imola,1883-1967), “Snow-Covered Pine Forest”, oil on canvas, 42×101 cm. On the back, along with the signature and date, there is a dedication to a friend in tones ranging from ironic to facetious: “LET US UNDERSTAND THIS SKETCH WAS DONE BY THE PAINTER DELLA VOLPE AND EXTORTED (UNFORTUNATELY!) FROM THAT BEAUTIFUL VOLUME LUCIANO REBEGGIANI, FUTURE LIGHT OF DRAMATIC ART. IMOLA, 4 JULY 1956. TOMMASO DELLA VOLPE”. Della Volpe was a painter, engraver, miniaturist and decorator, as well as one of the pioneers of Italian photography. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, he exhibited for the first time in Imola in 1903. From that moment on, he attended numerous national and regional exhibitions. He participated in the Venice Biennials of 1914 and 1926 and in the Rome exhibition of 1927. One of his paintings, “Il rustico”, was purchased by the King in 1908. His works are kept in public and private galleries in Rome, Venice, Bologna, Milan, London, Rio de Janeiro. He painted frescoes in many churches in Romagna and Puglia (we remember the great decorative cycle of the Mother Church of Taranto). In his last solo exhibition in Forlì (1956) he was praised by critics for his fresher and more synthetic workmanship and for his exuberant palette in dealing with landscape and figure themes. Perhaps it was during this exhibition that Rebeggiani had the opportunity to appreciate and therefore purchase the painting in question. Luciano Rebeggiani was an actor from Imola who achieved a certain fame thanks to his participation in several films shot in the 50s.
