Description

Torana, Jain architectural element in Makrana marble from a Jain temple. The torana is supported by the trunks and tusks of two elephants; their eyes are inlaid with black stone. From the pachyderms arise sinuous plant shoots that end in Makaras. These mythological animals flank three niches in which a Jina in padmasana posture is housed. In the niche at the top we recognize Parshvanath, the 23rd of the 24 Tirthankaras of Jainism, the only one who obtained the title of Kalīkālkalpataru. Parshvanatha is one of the first Tirthankaras recognized as historical figures. His iconography is recognizable by the serpent hood over his head.
