Description

Two-body trumeau in lacquered and painted wood. Rome, 18th century.

120 x 60 xh 235 cm.

A two-piece trumeau, entirely made of lacquered and painted wood, made in Rome in the 18th century. The lower section features a straight front with three drawers and a drop-leaf, which, when opened, reveals a series of compartments and drawers; the upper section is divided into double-opening doors. The pictorial decoration, executed in tempera on a celadon-green background with yellow ochre frames and reliefs, develops an iconographic program centered on the Allegory of the Arts: the drop-leaf depicts a reclining allegorical female figure, identifiable as Painting or Sculpture, flanked by putti carrying the instruments of the arts; the panels of the upper doors feature compositions of putti engaged in the practice of the figurative arts, enlivened by medallions with Latin inscriptions and garlands of flowers and fruit. The interior of the upper section is decorated in imitation wallpaper with stylized ornamental motifs. The piece is completed with carved and gilded wooden elements on the uprights and the shaped cornice.

Condition report: Good overall condition, with widespread wear and lacquer loss consistent with the piece's age. The painted decorations show localized abrasions and traces of previous restorations.
