The Adoration of the Shepherds is the subject of this small and precious oil on copper painting, executed in the late 16th century by a painter active in the orbit of the great Northern Mannerist masters who had settled between Venice and Prague. The scene is crowded with sacred and angelic figures arranged in a dense pyramidal shape: the Virgin, robed in deep pink and blue, holds the Child just laid in white swaddling clothes, while Saint Joseph looks on thoughtfully behind her. Around her, a chorus of musical angels and shepherds bearing offerings enlivens the composition, culminating at the top with the figure of the announcing angel unfurling a golden scroll, illuminated by a supernatural light that pierces the leaden sky. In the foreground, two figures, portrayed half-length and seen from behind—a kneeling shepherd with a basket of eggs and a young woman—serve as compositional backdrops that invite the viewer's gaze to participate in the scene, almost as if they themselves were present at the event. This compositional device, as effective as it was rare in late-16th-century painting, derives directly from the work of Hans van Aachen, and in particular from his Adoration of the Magi, now housed in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, where similar figures seen from behind in the foreground create the same effect of direct involvement of the viewer. It is no coincidence that van Aachen replicated this same invention, identical in composition but in a smaller format on copper, in the Adoration of the Magi, now housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna: the small support and copper technique, shared with the painting examined here, testify to a widespread practice among the painters of the Prague court, accustomed to creating small cabinet works destined for refined collectors. While the compositional structure thus harks back to van Aachen, the pictorial rendering—made of soft brushstrokes, luminous flesh tones, and a warm, enameled color palette—is more directly reminiscent of the manner of Hans Rottenhammer, whose figurative vocabulary appears here assimilated with remarkable accuracy. Comparison with works such as the Rest on the Flight into Egypt in the Gemäldegalerie in Kassel, or the two versions of the Adoration of the Shepherds in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich—one horizontally composed, the other vertically, both on copper—reveals clear similarities in the treatment of the angelic figures, the flowing draperies, and the luminous construction of the nocturnal scenes. Rottenhammer's Holy Family, also on copper and in the same Munich collection, shares with our painting that atmosphere suspended between intimate devotion and decorative opulence typical of collectible paintings of late international Mannerism.

The painting is housed in an antique carved and gilded wooden frame, dating from shortly after the work itself. The outer edge of the frame is enlivened by a dense, twisted ribbon pattern that creates a vibrant play of light and shade along the entire perimeter. In the central band, at the corners and at the midpoints of the sides, striking geometric rosettes in relief stand out, set within fan-shaped cartouches. These rosettes are arranged on a burin-worked background that enhances the brilliance of the gilding, lending the whole a preciousness that complements the pictorial refinement of the small copper panel.
