View of Venice with the Basilica della Salute and the Punta della Dogana
oil on canvas (40 x 52 cm. – framed 48 x 60 cm.)
Full details of the work (click HERE)
The beautiful view of Venice, executed with great finesse, chooses the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute as the protagonist of the representation, with its large dome dominating the entrance to the Grand Canal, with the Punta della Dogana at the left end, which joins with the Basin of St. Mark.
This is a painting by an artist with great skills in view painting, to be found among the worthy followers of Giacomo Guardi (Venice, 1764 – Venice, 1835), son and pupil of the well-known view painter Francesco Guardi.
His production, in fact, primarily features small-format compositions, intended to satisfy the demands of collectors and sophisticated foreign travelers who, during their Grand Tour, desired an elegant memento of the lagoon city. Their compact size allowed them to be carried with luggage, while these small "postcards" have now become highly sought-after and appreciated by modern collectors.
We can compare the proposed painting with a canvas 'Venice, Church of the Salute with Punta della Dogana' (Follower of Giacomo Guardi, Cariplo Foundation Collection, Imm.1)

The style of the painting is modeled on his modus pingendi, both in terms of treatment of the water, the boats and even the macchiette, all of which testifies to the profound knowledge of the manner developed by his father, albeit expressed in a personal interpretation.
Its peculiarity, which we find perfectly in the proposed canvas, is the choice to abandon the broad views and focus on a more limited view, "cutting out" a cameo of the very broad perspective visions of his father.
As we can see by comparing the canvas with the same view immortalised by Francesco Guardi (Santa Maria della Salute church in Venice, Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, Imm.2), the shot narrows and makes the church overlooking the waters of the lagoon the protagonist of the canvas.

The view, in excellent condition, intact and with scattered retouches, is enriched by a beautiful gilded frame.
