The canvas shows a view of Venice with the monumental Piazza di San Marco, one of the most evocative and pictorially appreciated views of the lagoon city, often the scene of sumptuous ceremonies, capable of exercising an incredible charm on foreigners, as well as on the main clients of the landscape painters of the eighteenth century
In the painting the square is dominated by the famous Basilica of San Marco while on the sides you can see the buildings of the procuratie illustrated in perspective, on the right, the Palazzo Ducale, almost hidden by the bell tower.
The idea of our landscape artist was to strongly highlight the role of the square: the vital center of the city and its true "soul". In the eighteenth century it became one of the most sought after lagoon representations by the nobles who undertook the Grand Tour, almost an obligatory icon testifying to the journey undertaken.
The beautiful canvas should be compared, in particular, to the hand of a Venetian author active in the eighteenth century, from the entourage of the Venetian landscape artist Francesco Tironi (Venice, 1745-1797).
This reference is supported by comparison with the painter's certain works, for the similar way of setting the scenes, in the common tendency in the rendering of perspective, for the attention to detail of the precisely drawn architecture, for the marked play of lights and shadows and for the typology of the numerous Canaletto-style figures that animate the scene.
The eighteenth century for Venice, in the artistic and cultural fields, is a second "golden age" and the genre of the city view became an appreciated and extremely requested genre in the workshops of the great names of Vedutism, to satisfy the needs of patrician families, especially English and Germans, but also French, who visited the city during their "Voyage d'Italie".
Tironi is certainly considered one of the excellences of this pictorial field, with a rich array of collaborators active in his workshop. Well executed and rich in details and characters, our canvas turns out to be a very interesting testimony of eighteenth-century Venice portrayed from one of the most famous and extraordinary views of the city.
The view, in excellent conservation conditions, intact and without significant restorations, not recently relined, and enriched by a beautiful golden frame, not contemporary.
