Description

Gabriele Bella (Venice 1730 – Venice 1799) attributable

View of Venice with the Guglie Bridge (or Cannaregio, as it was called in ancient times)

1750/60 approximately

oil on canvas (45 x 60 cm. – with frame 58 x 73 cm.)

The view of Venice presented here, which immortalises the Ponte delle Guglie over the Cannaregio Canal, is a work of excellent quality attributable to Gabriele Bella (Venice 1730 – 1799), one of the protagonists of the grandiose season of Venetian vedutism of the eighteenth century, whose painting is characterised by an eclectic taste, influenced by the examples of the illustrious Canaletto prototypes.

Due to the quality and typology of the figures that animate the painting, in addition to the compositional typology, noting in particular the rendering of the architecture, the dating can be limited to the second half of the 18th century; the panorama is rendered with a valuable narrative verve, in fact, while maintaining the Canaletto structure, our author intervenes freely in describing the navigation and strolling activities that took place daily in Venice, with a scenic composition also derived from Marieschi.

Active throughout his career in Venice, Bella worked for a long time exclusively for the Giustiniani, a family of patrons who commissioned him for their home (now the seat of the Querini-Stampalia art gallery) a grandiose series of around seventy Venetian views, in which he described the festive life of the Serenissima in its last century of life.

Added to this group of famous canvases is a corpus of works that the painter executed for the rest of his clients, a series of views in a more traditional style, depicting important places and buildings, and to which we can also connect our painting.

Very well executed, characterised by a light luminosity and a chromatic range of delicate shades, highlighted by the contrast between light and shadow, the canvas turns out to be a very interesting testimony of eighteenth-century Venice, imbued with a poetry that effectively renders the lagoon atmosphere.

The view, in good condition of conservation, relined not recently, is enriched by a beautiful gilded frame.
