W. Miller was a British painter active in the second half of the 19th century, whose work is in the tradition of the English Romantic landscape. The painting depicts a wooded ravine crossed by a stream flowing peacefully between moss-covered granite boulders, while in the background the water ripples in a small rapid. The composition is set in depth along the axis of the stream, with the trees framing the scene on the sides and allowing light to filter in from the open sky above. The palette, dominated by deep browns and greens, is enlivened by the luminous reflections on the water's surface.
