The work under consideration is a refined example of 19th-century minor sculpture, conceived to celebrate 18th-century musical culture with exquisite retrospective taste. The group, masterfully modeled in polychrome stucco on ebonized wooden bases, presents a chamber ensemble divided into three groups, ranging from the technical rigor of the stringed instruments to the theatrical grace of the vocal scene. The instrumental ensemble represented is of notable interest and includes a violin and cello engaged in a close dialogue before a shared music stand, an imposing double bass vigorously wielded by a soloist, and, finally, a historical keyboard, identifiable as a spinet or small harpsichord, which supports the singing of the standing figure. The anonymous artist demonstrates a profound sensitivity in capturing the gestures of the performance, meticulously crafting not only the anatomy of the instruments but also the postures of the players, captured in a suspended dynamism that imbues the whole with a fascinating narrative vitality. The figures' attire, inspired by the dictates of Rococo fashion with doublets and powdered hairdos, reflects the nineteenth-century historicist tendency toward a nostalgic and courtly evocation of the Age of Enlightenment.
