View from the spires of Milan Cathedral
Watercolor, 43 x 30 cm
The watercolour in question depicts some ladies and gentlemen intent on enjoying the view from the terraces of the Milan Cathedral. The composition is carefully studied and the characters are linked by corresponding gestures and glances; the first girl is lying comfortably on the ground next to a young man and is enrapturedly watching a flock of birds that is rapidly coming towards them. In front of them, an older lady is bent over the ground, while a little further back, an elegantly dressed girl is sheltering in the shade of a colourful umbrella, holding out a hand full of birdseed towards the hungry pigeons. Some of them have already gathered in the foreground and are pecking at the feed undisturbed, completely oblivious to the human presence. Characteristic objects enrich the scene, such as the jacket and umbrella lying on the ground or the red cloth resting on the balustrade of the terrace on which a pair of binoculars is placed, used to fully appreciate the wide panorama; the observer can sense its presence thanks to the glimpse of the city that opens up behind the imposing buttress.
The view faithfully captures a slice of 19th-century daily life, meticulously rendering the details, architectural elements and statues that still decorate the cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Nascente, the symbol par excellence of the Lombard capital. The calm and carefree atmosphere that characterizes the work is further conveyed by the palette of soft colors spread in overlapping glazes, which, in addition to giving strength and tone to the color itself, give the preparatory drawing, usually done in light pencil, the pictorial depth useful for the representation of volumes, shadows and light.
