Description

17th century, follower of Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato (1609-1689)

Praying Madonna

Oil on canvas applied on board, 27 x 20 cm

The work in question, a splendid example of oil on canvas subsequently applied to wooden panel dating back to the 17th century, is most likely to be attributed to a follower of the painter from the Marche region Giovanni Battista Salvi, better known as Il Sassoferrato (Sassoferrato, 1609 – Rome, 1685).

After learning the art of painting in his father Tarquinio Salvi's workshop, he worked for a time in Bologna in Domenichino's workshop, but was also influenced by other contemporary artists, including Guido Reni and Francesco Albani. His painting also bears echoes of the great masterpieces of Albrecht Dürer, Guercino, and especially Raphael.

Considered a faithful exponent of the pictorial tradition of his time, he was dubbed by critics as the "Painter of the Madonna" precisely because of the extraordinary, admirable, and devout beauty of his celebrated Virgins, characterized by the celestial candor of their faces. The smooth application of color and the clear light emanating from the hand of Sassoferrato are exemplary, and it is said that he neither signed nor dated his works.

Sassoferrato's success, especially in the late eighteenth century, is demonstrated by the predilection accorded to his images by the Popes themselves. Having grasped the devout spirit evident in his Madonnas, they promoted Marian devotion by using Salvi's canvases. The Praying Virgin is, in fact, among the most reproduced subjects based on requests expressed by the faithful at the time.
