Description

Terracotta sculpture painted in polychrome with a tilting head, depicting the figure of a Chinese dignitary in a seated position in the act of clutching a fabric with his left hand, while his right hand is placed on his belly. The sculpture rests on a marbled base. Slight loss of color and restoration on the headpiece. The magot, little men originally portraying Pu-Tai, the Chinese god of happiness and abundance, were born in northern China and between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries reached Europe, where like many other chinoiserie they became the status symbol of aristocratic houses.
