Pietra Paesena is a unique sedimentary stone, originating almost exclusively from Tuscany. Formed about 50 million years ago, it stands out for its composition of compact limestone and clay, or marly limestone. The name derives from the evocative images hidden inside. Designs created by Mother Nature, which simulate breathtaking landscapes: ruined cities, stormy seas, coves, rocks, volcanoes and mountains. A true natural masterpiece that captures the imagination.

The main extraction area is located in the surroundings of Florence, where favorable geological conditions have existed since the 16th century. There are no actual quarries, but the stone is found randomly, giving it an even more refined charm. The shades of the Paese Pietra are determined by the presence of minerals: light gray for the limestone, reddish-brown for the iron oxides, black for the manganese and blue for the clay. The combination of these colors and the intricate shapes of the internal landscapes make each stone a unique and precious piece.

The use of the Paesena Stone is purely artistic and collectible. Polished thin sheets are used to create fine works of art. Since 1588, the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence has used it to create mosaics and inlays of inestimable value. Its beauty also conquered France, where Cardinals Richelieu and Mazarin were great admirers of it. For quality, colors and realism, the Paesena Stone extracted from the Florentine hills is considered the best in the world. So much so that, in many countries, it is called the "Stone of Florence", testifying to its uniqueness and its link with the Tuscan city.
