Ancient Russian icon ''Madonna of Deesis''
Central Russia – 19th century
71 cm x 40 cm.
Egg tempera on wooden board
Ancient Russian icon with the Mother of God, portrayed full-length and facing three-quarters to the right, with one hand raised on the chest as a sign of prayer and the other holding an open scroll.
The particular depiction, with the Virgin alone without Child, represents a variant of the particular Marian iconography called Aghiosoritissa (in Greek it means "Intercessor"), initially widespread in Byzantine art and then in all European countries of the medieval period.
In particular, our icon must have originally been an integral part of a more complex composition, commonly called 'the Deesis', a type of representation which includes the figure of Christ blessing in the centre, with the Madonna on the left and Saint John the Baptist on the right, both in an act of prayer with the function of interceding for the sins of the faithful.
Our icon therefore sees Mary, as mentioned, turned towards her right where Christ would ideally be found on the throne.
The proposed icon, of excellent quality, originating from central Russia, made in the 19th century. Both the format and the large dimensions make it very rare and of great interest for the market of Russian art collectors.
