Description

Folding table veneered and inlaid in different woods, Emilia, late 18th/early 19th century
81x99x50 cm, 81x99x100 cm (open top)

The piece of furniture represents one of the examples of the most refined Emilian cabinet-making, rich in inlay materials and decoration. The closed top is decorated with opposing spirals that start from the center, within multiple frames. But it is the open plan that shows all its preciousness: in the center there is a roundel that frames a flower motif composed of large oak leaves within a frame of thin flowered and leafed spirals. From the center four rays are inlaid with candelabras supported by candlestick putti. The rays punctuate the surface in four wings inlaid with foliate scrolls that start from two dolphins and end in a rose shoot. A high frame broken by connecting nuts concludes the decoration of the top on the sides. The preciousness of this piece of furniture then consists in the particular method of closing the top which is obtained by folding the belt. The belt is inlaid with wave motifs that follow one another interspersed with flowers. Typically Emilian are the legs which have an octagonal section, grooved and tapered, also happily inlaid with cascades of leaves. Ball feet.
