Description

Attr. to Annibale Gatti (Forlì 1827 – Florence 1909)
Allegorical scene
Oil on paper applied on panel, 25 x 30 cm – with 36 x 42 frame

The allegorical work, for analysis and stylistic comparison, can certainly be attributed to the hand of Annibale Gatti (1827-1909). A pupil of Giuseppe Bezzuoli, he was one of the greatest painters of the second half of the nineteenth century in Florence and the most representative of the period of Florence as the capital. Part of his production refers to mythological and allegorical scenes: the paper in question is a preparatory sketch belonging to the present cycle, a representative example of the romantic-purist painting of the time. A female character with a turreted crown on her head, identifiable with the Greek goddess Tyche, sits on a throne accompanied by Love at her side with the torch of the sacred fire in her hand. At her feet is a cornucopia from which weapons emerge. Around, five female figures place laurel wreaths on the base of the throne. The women could represent the five continents in the act of entrusting their identity and protection to the goddess. In the background, a blue sky is sketched, while other figures act in the background.
The fortune of Annibale Gatti is attested by the commissions of the Florentine bourgeoisie and aristocracy of the time, as well as by the frescoes of the royal apartments of Villa Meridiana in Palazzo Pitti, in 1861, intended as the residence of King Vittorio Emanuele II. To confirm the notoriety achieved by the painter, it is enough to consider that news of one of his works was reported in the Nazione of 23 June 1872, where it was announced that the painter was "completing Paisiello who stages his work The Servant before Catherine II of Russia Mistress." The attribution is further supported by a pencil writing on the back.
