Annunciation
Oil on copper, 26 x 16 cm
The subject depicted there is that of the Annunciation by the Archangel Gabriel to Mary, who is told that she has been chosen to become the Mother of God. The Virgin is therefore represented as usual at the lectern intent on sacred readings, when suddenly the Archangel appears before her, dressed in gold and erect on a cloud, who greets her as explained in the cartouche that runs along the flowered staff "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you, Blessed are you among women ”.
That the appearance of the Archangel Gabriel is unexpected is well exemplified by the verbal communication of the Madonna: the left hand raised to the chest indicating dismay and the head raised quickly to observe the divine creature. The scene follows a traditional compositional development, where the exact half of the painting is marked by the flowering rod, symbol of Mary's virginal purity, while the two characters are placed on the sides. The elements that contextualize the scene are few but effective: the lectern with the book on which Maria's attention was concentrated and a heavy green curtain, which forms the background of the scene, slightly moved to give light to a blue sky alluding to the origin of the messenger of God.
The stylistic references and references to Venetian colorism allow us to place this work in the context of the seventeenth-century Venetian school.
