Description
Nicola Viso (active in Naples in the first half of the 18th century)
Architectural Capriccio with ruined temple and scene of the rest of the Holy Family
oil painting on canvas
For obvious stylistic and qualitative reasons, the present composition can be ascribed to the pictorial production of the Neapolitan Nicola Viso, supported by the particular typology of the figures, as well as by the inventiveness and execution of the architecture.
It is a work that is strongly representative of the Face, as all aspects of his versatile personality are happily brought together in it: the landscape painter of ancient ruins with the figurist. The subject also falls within the typical compositions of the painter, who used to combine suggestive architectural whims with religious themes; in our case the architectural ruins of an imposing temple provide the backdrop for the rest of the Holy Family, accompanied by three fluttering angels.
A light and airy atmosphere, the articulation of the landscape, the delicate chromatic harmony and the brightness suggest a dating around the mid-18th century.
The painting is presumably the companion piece to the work proposed by Christie's (Old Master Paintings, Milan, Palazzo Clerici 28 November 2007), depicting a similar architectural capriccio, with the same measurements, and with the episode of the Visitation.
