Description

Valentino Panciera Besarel's workshop – Finely carved wooden writing table. Venice, 19th century.

73 x 60 xh 101 cm.

A refined writing table crafted entirely from finely carved wood, supported by a tripod base with crossed faux bamboo legs, joined by a cross-shaped crosspiece. The top, designed in the shape of a folding book, is decorated with engraved floral motifs and finished with brass studs and hinges. The upper surface features an elaborate sculptural group depicting a reclining cherub, captured in the act of writing with a quill pen, flanked by an inkwell and two small vases, all resting on a mixtilinear base carved with acanthus leaf motifs and a central mask.

The work can be traced back to the Venetian workshop of Valentino Panciera Besarel, a sculptor active in Venice in the second half of the 19th century and famous for the naturalistic flair of his carved compositions, often animated by cherubs and subjects with an oriental flavour, as in the case of the fake bamboo legs, a typical element of the exotic taste widespread in Venetian furnishings at the end of the century.
