17th century Flemish painter
Battle of Poltava, 1709
Oil on canvas, 103 × 138 cm
The painting in question describes a battle scene in which some classical vestiges are inserted, used as splendid and powerful scenic backdrops: depicted are high stone walls and what appears to be a tomb or an altar in which scenes in bas-relief can be glimpsed. The center is occupied by a knight on a white horse, his figure appears isolated and in a state of timeless anticipation of the clash while the battle rages all around; men now fallen, soldiers calling for help, banners waving in the wind, clashes that are lost on the horizon. The battle illustrated is that of Poltava which took place on 8 July 1709, which took place in central Ukraine, between the Russian troops of Peter the Great and the Swedish forces, Cossacks of King Charles XII. The latter is recognized in the rider on a white horse in the center of the canvas. The character on the left with a turban is the hetman Mazeppa. The battle was won by the Russians and the Swedish king was routed. In fact, he had to take refuge with the Turkish sultan Mazeppa.
The painting for stylistic and compositional comparisons can be linked to a painter of the 17th century Dutch school who specialized in complex, large-scale battle scenes.
For comparison, consider the works of the Dutch painter Hendrick Verschuring (Gorinchem, 2 November 1627 – Dordrecht, 26 April 1690), whose pictorial production was concentrated especially in the genre of battles. He also traveled to Italy where he acquired a notable ability in the representation of horses, thus specializing in elegant hunting and equestrian subjects. See works by him in the Statens Museum for Kunst, the Bavarian State Painting Collection and the National Gallery, London.
The works of Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp, circa 1630 – Antwerp, circa 1677) are also close to the painter who worked here, where the presence of ancient ruins (often citations to Roman monuments) within the landscape is frequent, as in the example Market scene of the Cariplo Foundation and in the battle of the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery and in those presented on the antiques market.
Other references are also found in the battles of Karel Breydel known as The Cavalier of Antwerp (Antwerp, 1678-1733) in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm
