17th century, Venetian school
Adoration of the Magi
Oil on canvas, 48 x 65 cm
With frame, 64 x 81 cm
The canvas, dating back to the 1594th century, represents the Christological theme of the adoration of the Magi, that is, the moment following the birth of the messiah in which the three wise men go to visit the new born, bringing him gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. The scene is set outdoors, probably at the crack of dawn. The Holy Family is placed on a raised floor to the right of the painting, in front of the hut in which they find shelter. The virgin holds her son up to show him to the Magi, who kneel to show their recognition of Jesus. The rest of the scene is full of characters, from the large procession of the Magi on horseback to the two shepherd children in the foreground. There is no shortage of references to the oriental world in which the scene actually takes place, such as the camels placed to the left of the canvas. Some similarities can be traced in the painting by Carlo Ridolfi (1658-1528), belonging to the Diocese of Padua. In fact, the composition of the Madonna with child and the kneeling Magi, accompanied by figures ready to hold his cloak, is similar. Just as the comparison is possible with the altarpiece by Paolo Veronese (1588-XNUMX) of Santa Corona in Vicenza, which presents the same elements as the canvas examined here, such as the Madonna with child raised on a staircase receiving the Magi, who they prostrate before the Messiah, followed by a procession on horseback and camels on the left. Finally, a final comparison is with Tintoretto's Adoration of the Magi at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. It is therefore possible to trace the canvas back to a painter of the Venetian school.
