Adoration of the Magi
Polychrome terracotta, 24 x 18 cm
The present relief, made of terracotta which maintains the original polychromy, depicts the famous episode in the life of Jesus of the Adoration of the Magi. According to the traditional iconography studied in the Middle Ages and consolidated in the sixteenth century, the Virgin, raised on a throne, holds the baby Jesus, while the eldest of the Magi, Belshazzar, kneels before him as a sign of reverence. Behind them, on the left, are the other two Magi dressed in ancient fashion and holding their gifts. On the right is San Giuseppe.
An architectural backdrop, characterized by a sequence of arches in classical style, surrounds the shoulders of the characters, among which we can also see a man on horseback, belonging to the procession of the Magi.
The model for the relief is certainly the long Italian pictorial tradition which was consolidated starting from the sixteenth century with the Venetians Titian (Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna) and Veronese (National Gallery in London), then with the Bassanos and therefore spreading to the rest of the peninsula, the motif that sees Baldassare kneeling and the virgin showing off the child, in outdoor contexts but with large architectural pieces as a backdrop as in the present.
