FULL DETAILS (click HERE)

The pair of paintings on offer, works by a Neapolitan artist active between the 17th and 18th centuries, depict two biblical episodes from the life of Abraham, involving in particular the patriarch's two sons, Ishmael and Isaac, and narrated in the Book of Genesis.

The first painting speaks of little Ishmael, Abraham's firstborn, born from his union with the Egyptian slave Hagar, a union consented to by his wife Sarah in order to have an heir, given that by now she was old and thought she could no longer have one, with the aim of adopting him at the time of birth.

After the birth of his son Isaac, however, his wife Sarah becomes acutely jealous of the young slave Hagar, and Abraham is then forced to send her away together with their son Ishmael,

In the illustrated episode we see Hagar, lost in the desert of Beersheba and desperate for the imminent death of her little son, here helped by the Archangel Michael who shows her a spring to which she can take her son to quench his thirst.

The second painting instead tells of Isaac, the second son of Abraham, born to his wife Sarah although at an advanced age.

God subjected Abraham to an extraordinary test of obedience, and to see the strength of his faith he ordered him to sacrifice him; he went without hesitation to Mount Moriah and while he was preparing to diligently carry out the sacrifice, already holding the knife, he was stopped by the angel sent by the Lord, who grabbed his wrist with a strong and concrete grip, and showed him a ram to be sacrificed as a substitute sacrifice.
