Little biographical information and fragmentary chronological references remain about Maximilian Pfeiler, but his surviving works allow us to clearly outline his artistic profile and the significant role he played in European figurative culture between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Born in Prague, Pfeiler is documented in 1683 as a member of the city's Painters' Guild, evidence of his already completed training and early integration into the local professional context. According to sources, he was a pupil of Christian Berentz, a painter of German origins specializing in still lifes, whose artistic career spanned the Netherlands and Rome. Through Berentz, Pfeiler came into contact with the Northern European tradition of the genre, characterized by meticulous naturalistic rendering, a strong focus on material, and a refined orchestration of color. It is not entirely clear whether his apprenticeship with Berentz took place directly in Rome; It is certain, however, that Pfeiler was active in the papal capital from at least 1694. Here, the artist successfully integrated himself into a lively and competitive artistic environment, initiating collaborations with established painters such as Francesco Trevisani and Michele Rocca. His presence in late 17th-century Rome coincided with a particularly successful period for still life, a genre prized both for its decorative value and for its subtle symbolic allusions to abundance, transience, and the cycle of life. Still Life with White and Black Grapes fits perfectly into this context and represents an emblematic example of Pfeiler's work. The composition, built on a balanced accumulation of bunches of grapes of different varieties, leaves, and delicate flowers, reveals an extraordinary attention to the tactile rendering of surfaces: the grapes appear turgid and translucent, struck by a soft light that enhances their chromatic hues, from golden green to purplish red. The dark, atmospheric background helps isolate the natural elements, lending the scene an intimate and contemplative tone. These extravagant and recognizable compositions found favor with important collectors. Some of Pfeiler's works, for example, were included in Cardinal Fesch's collection, a testament to the artist's high level of appreciation. The last documentary evidence of Maximilian Pfeiler dates back to 1721; it is likely that he spent much of his life in Rome, enjoying a solid and enduring reputation. Still Life with Black and White Grapes thus portrays a painter capable of blending Nordic rigor with Italian sensibility, offering an original and highly elegant synthesis in the panorama of Baroque still life.
