Pair of consoles
(2) Carved walnut wood, 114 x 61 x 81 cm
The pair of consoles in question, with a shaped top in yellow Verona marble from Torre del Benaco, presents peculiarities typical of the eighteenth-century Venetian language, such as the band, in walnut wood, carved with a succession of volutes and the cabriole legs ending in a curl . The legs are also delightfully carved with rocaille-style decoration at the knee.
The 18th century is notoriously the century of reason, enlightenment and the individual. From new philosophical ideas and individual consciences comes a changed attitude towards life and a new will to live everyday life. This is also reflected in the furnishings which become more graceful, softer and more sinuous. The consoles, therefore, take on a certain lightness, based on agile and curved legs and in general the structure, imaginatively worked, is perhaps more nervous and articulated than the previous baroque ones. The so-called rocaille motifs, which refer to shells, foliage and garlands, become recurrent. The fragmentation of Italy into many small states means that individual regional languages develop. Venetian manufacturing stands out in particular, adapting to the aristocratic palaces and homes of the merchant bourgeoisie which was not tied to the dictates of fashion or courtly taste and therefore was able to develop a type of practical but elegant furniture which reinvented the European influences. In addition to the carved wooden furniture of which the pair of consoles stands as a wonderful example, lacquered furniture decorated with oriental motifs and chinoiserie also became famous in the Veneto region.
