Fascinating and rare wooden sculpture depicting the full-figure Virgin carrying the Child in her left arm, the work of a Franco-Hispanic artist, presumably active in the Catalan/Pyrenean area between the 1200th and 1300th centuries (XNUMX/XNUMX).

It is an important testimony of medieval sculptural art, with its preciousness and historical merits, and which, despite the evident simplicity of construction, exudes an incredible strength and a very refined stylistic purity.

We are precisely in the Late Middle Ages, a period of profound artistic evolution which, passing through the important lesson of Romanesque art, will evolve in the following centuries culminating in the artistic splendor of the Renaissance.

The sculpture, while retaining some characteristics still belonging to the habits of the previous century, develops new formal solutions, and the primitive stylistic rigor of Romanesque art sees here a metamorphosis to the novelties of Gothic art, which we can for example recognize in the soft and natural drapery of the Virgin's robes.

Consequently, while Mary still partly maintains a hieratic position, her son appears more dynamic, especially in the positioning of the hands, one of which extends towards the other as if for an embrace, and of the head turned slightly towards the mother.

The wooden essence of the sculpture is oak wood, with a still solid and compact consistency, although there are small defects and wear dictated by time.
