Description

Giulio Cisari (Como, 1892 – Milan, 1979)

Sun on the horizon

oil on canvas, 150×160 cm

 signed lower right “CISARI”

“Seascapes dense with colour, suggestive sunsets, mists full of mysteries” (Scarpa, 1920) are just some of the pictorial works of the multifaceted Giulio Cisari, including the canvas illustrated therein, with particularly positive results.

It is in fact a marina, taken from a rather close point of view and at sunset. The horizon line cuts the surface of the canvas perfectly in half but the two parts, the uniform one of the sky and the rippled one of the water, are barely differentiated by some yellow-golden brushstrokes, colors of the sun now beyond the horizon and which radiates from the center of the canvas, illuminating the surface of the water. The initial impression is almost that of being faced with an abstract work like the monochromes of Malevich or Rodchenko. But the roots of this still figurative work are to be found in Seurat's post-impressionism or Segantini's divisionism.

The two parts of the painting are differentiated by a different pictorial treatment: if the sky is created through the juxtaposition of small touches of color, the sea is reserved for long, stringy brushstrokes.

Cisari here seems to be interested more than in the denotative color, i.e. the one strictly linked to the world of real representation, in the connotative one therefore linked to non-descriptive but rather evocative meanings, embracing symbolist tendencies.

Born in Como in 1892, Cisari graduated in Architecture at the Brera Academy, also attending painting and sculpture courses under the guidance of L. Pogliaghi, C. Tallone, G. Mentessi, V. Arcaini and G. Moretti. After completing his studies, he worked as a teacher at the academy, before dedicating himself to art. Under the guidance of De Carolis, he perfected himself in all reproduction techniques, identifying the woodcut as an exemplary expressive medium and also worked alongside personalities still recognized today as fundamental in the world of advertising graphics such as Depero and Nizzoli. Today his pictorial, illustration, poster and graphic works are also preserved in museum collections such as those in Milan, in the Maggiore Hospital Museum (Portrait of Sofia Gervasini) and in the Gallery of Modern Art; in Florence in the Uffizi Gallery; in Trieste, at the Revoltella Civic Museum; furthermore, in private collections in Italy and abroad.

Cisari's poster works were particularly appreciated, so much so that they won first prize at the XIII and XX Venice Biennales. He also participated in painting competitions, obtaining several prizes.

He died in Milan on 28 March 1972.
