Description

Joseph Félix Bouchor (Paris, 1853 – 1937)

View of the Loggia della Signoria in Florence

Oil on canvas, 47 x 39 cm

Signed lower right: JFBouchor

The painting in question, depicting a view of the Loggia della Signoria in Florence, can be attributed to the hand of the French painter Joseph Félix Bouchor (Paris, 1853 – 1937), as also attested by the signature present at the bottom right of the canvas.

After training at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Bouchor's talent led him to exhibit his works at the Salon des Artistes Français (1878), a significant event on a symbolic level for France because, taking place simultaneously with the The Universal Exhibition at the Palais de l'Industrie restored Paris to its role as a cultural stronghold. With the outbreak of the First World War he was incorporated into the Allied troops, creating many military paintings featuring the French and American infantry, cavalry and air force in action on the front line. At the end of the conflict, Joseph Félix Bouchor traveled to Italy, to which he dedicated a series of views of the main capitals of the peninsula, and to North Africa, where he painted orientalist subjects.

Part of the landscape movement of the late nineteenth century, Bouchor created landscapes and city views immersed in an impalpable, ethereal, light atmosphere, irradiated by light. The use of light colors and short brushstrokes contribute to giving his paintings a vibrant, almost impressionistic luminosity, where space materializes in a sort of magical apparition, still vaguely romantic.

The fame achieved by this artist is well demonstrated by the placement of his works in numerous public collections, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Museums of Fine Arts in Marseille, Angers, Vannes and Nantes.
