19th-20th century

Sizes

7,5 x 8 xh 13,5 cm the sculpture, 14 x 14 xh 18 cm the box.

Description

Russian manufacture (19th-20th century) – Seated old man.

7,5 x 8 xh 13,5 cm the sculpture, 14 x 14 xh 18 cm the box.

Full-length figure in various marbles and hard stones, inside a display case.

The sculpture depicts an old man seated on a richly decorated throne, his hands folded in his lap, over which a blanket rests. The figure is crafted entirely of marble and semiprecious stones of varying colors, expertly assembled to reflect the different elements of his clothing and complexion: the face is made of light-colored stone, the robe of dark green marble, the collar of white stone, and the blanket on his legs is made of yellow-brown mottled stone. The throne, with a mixtilinear profile, is crafted of reddish-brown mottled semiprecious stone, with agate armrests and a gilded metal front panel with decorative motifs; a small white stone set around the neck enhances the figure's detail. The work is inspired by the famous semiprecious stone figures created by the House of Fabergé between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a genre that enjoyed great success in Russian stone production with its depictions of folk characters and scenes of everyday life.
